JodamaOrdinary people that value and celebrate their diverse culture, history and
traditions by way of drum and dance.

The group Jodama was formally established in 2003 in Sacramento under the direction of
self-taught choreographer Latoya Bowman; a young lady local critics say was born to
perform.   This group of dedicated young people started performing in the garage of a
fellow church member in 1994.  Much to their surprise what started out as a just playing
around session would later turn into a unique combination of drum and dance that many
within the community would come to support and appreciate for years to come.  Jodama
would go on to perform in public for the first time at the George Sims Community Center
in February of 1995.  As the group continued to perform throughout the community their
talent would began to expand as well.  They would be asked to perform for the next few
years for the “Reflections From the Past” Black History Month celebration conducted
annually on the last Sunday of February by the House of Prayer Holy Reformation
Church at the Sam Pannell Community center located in Sacramento, California.

With the efforts of visionary John Spann and his uniquely creative drum compositions, the
group would go on to integrate some of the most imaginative instruments and
instrumentalists of all time, right from their very own families, church and community,
and would later be hailed by many as Sacramento’s best kept little secret.

This multi-talented group of young people  have been working together
for the past few years devoting and priding themselves on performing a wide variety
of historically enriched drum and dance routines that blend and fuse dance steps
from many ethnic cultures.  Jodama has been recognized for their talent, creativity and
originality by Mayor Heather Fargo, Senator Deborah Ortiz, Senator Don Perata,
Senator Darrell Steinberg and several other local leaders.
